Classical literatures in Greek and Latin; irony in ancient to contemporary literature; tragedy and myth; the fairy tale and narrative morphology; translation.

Education

Ph.D., Cornell University, 1962 (major field: Latin literature; minor fields: Greek literature and ancient history).

M.A., Cornell University, 1959.

B.A., Bryn Mawr College, 1958 (magna cum laude, honors in Latin).

The Praise of Folly: Structure and Irony (1983).

Translation of The Story of Apollonius the King of Tyre (1978).

More than 30 articles, including "The Education of Achilles, as Treated in the Literature of Late Antiquity"(1965), "Vir fortis sine manibus and the Handless Maiden" (1969), "The Pastoral World of Hilarius' In Genesis"; (1990). Has published and received various awards for her poetry.


Work in Progress

Books:

Poetry as Spiritual Refuge: Creative Merrtry in Late Latin Literature.

The Lesser Poems of Catullus: Multum in Parvo A translation into English of Zenta Maurina's autobiographic trilogy.

Various articles and possibly a textbook based on my course in the fairy tale (a rough draft is ready).

Member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi.

At Cornell, Woodrow Wilson, University, and Fels fellow (also awarded an AAUW fellowship, but did not accept).

Mellon Junior Fellowship, 1968-69, for use at the University of Pittsburgh; turned down for personal reasons.

State University of New York Faculty Research Fellowship, summers of 1970 and 1971.

National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend, summer 1972.

Research semester granted by SUNY-Binghamton, spring 1981.
